An Experimental Study of Effects of Cognitive Failure on Mechanical Design Process under CAD Environments

Abstract:

Two theoretical hypotheses for the effects of cognitive failure on design time and design quality were presented. A series of design cognition experiments about improvement design of a high-level gear pair of spiral conveyer reducer were conducted to test the hypotheses. The results of statistical analysis through Mann-Whitney non-parametric tests indicate:in terms of design time, the designers with fewer cognitive failures, as a whole, perform better than those with more; but in terms of design quality, there is generally no significant difference between the two groups of designers. So enhancing human design capability and rationally distributing CAD functions contribute to the improvement of design cognition process.

提出了CAD环境下认知失误与设计时间和设计质量之间影响关系研究的两个理论假设。开展对螺旋输送机减速器的高速级齿轮副进行改进的设计认知实验来验证假设。采用Mann-Whitney非参数检验进行统计分析。结果表明,认知失误较少的设计者,在设计时间方面的表现总体上优于认知失误较多的设计者;而在设计质量方面,两组设计者的表现在总体上没有显著差异。因此,强化人的设计能力并合理分配CAD功能有利于改善设计认知过程。
